A pair of 2023 Legacy Bloodstock yearling grads scored in Stakes over the last weekend in October, while the promising 3-year-old Stakes winner Uno Mas Bourbon aquitted himself well in his first try versus older Graded Stakes company.
On Friday, October 25 at Santa Anita, Silent Law broke like a shot, sped through quick fractions and comfortably held off a late bid from runner-up Practical Dream to win Friday’s $85,000 Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs.
From the first crop of classic winner Tiz the Law, Silent Law improved to 2-for-2 for trainer Bob Baffert and owner CSLR Racing Partners. In her debut Sept. 21 at Los Alamitos, Silent Law aired by 10 lengths when going 5 furlongs. She was purchased for $80,000 by Mustang Farms from the Legacy Bloodstock at last year’s Keeneland September sale.
She’s the latest success from breader Newstead Corp.
Silent Law proceeded to set fractions of 21.64, 44.65 and 57.57 for five furlongs before crossing the wire 3 ½ lengths in front with a final time of 1:11.11.
“She’s so fast out of the gate,” Hernandez said. “I went a little quick at the beginning of the race. That’s why she slowed down a little bit the last sixteenth.” Added Baffert: “I think it was pretty impressive as fast as she went early and kept going. There’s a lot of talent there. We just have to harness the speed a little better.”
To that end, Baffert also said Silent Law would likely race without blinkers next time.
“Maybe that will settle her down.”
Across the country the following day, Special Aviator also ran her record to a perfect 2-for-2 in the Our Dear Peggy Stakes. The first Stakes winner by WinStar Farm’s Global Campaign was purchased out of the Legacy Bloodstock consignment at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton October Sale. She was bred by Mark Secrest.
Trained by co-owner Rohan Crichton, Special Aviator graduated at first asking Sept. 21 going one mile and 70 yards on the Gulfstream Tapeta in a maiden special weight race originally carded for turf. The filly executed the jump to stakes company in the $75,000 Our Dear Peggy Stakes by a neck under jockey Edwin Gonzalez. She clocked the mile over a firm turf course in a final time of 1:35.67.
Also on the last Saturday in October, Keeneland September Grad Uno Mas Bourbon backed up his Super Derby victory against fellow 3-year-olds with a strong third place finish versus a salty field of older horses in Keeneland’s $350,000 Fayette S. (G3).
